Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that is found along with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in cold-water fish, including salmon, sardines, anchovies and herring. EPA has been shown to help reduce triglycerides and relieve inflammation.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid essential for brain development during pregnancy and early childhood. It is also linked to improved heart health, better vision, and reduced inflammatory response.

    FAQs

Why is ANC’s Super Omega EPA / DHA better than a standard fish oil?

Our new Super Omega EPA / DHA contains triple the amount of EPA and almost double the amount of DHA content. This means that you are receiving a higher dosage per capsules, which will allow for great therapeutic benefits. It is more convenient for consumption as fewer capsules can be taken daily due to this higher dose.

How can I better support heart health?

    • Participate in regular daily exercise
    • Avoid highly processed foods
    • Reduce consumption of tobacco and alcohol
    • Increase fruit and vegetable consumption
    • Manage stress levels
    • Consume antioxidant-rich foods
    • Avoid saturated and trans fats and replace with polyunsaturated and monounsaturated

    Where can I find Omega-3s?

Fish are the most important source of omega-3s in the Australian diet, with oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines having particularly high levels. If you’d like to top your omega-3 levels up by taking supplements, consider fish or krill oil capsules.

How much fish should I eat ?

The Heart Foundation recommends daily consumption of approximately 500 mg of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which is the equivalent of two or three 150g servings of oily fish per week. If you don’t eat this much fish on a regular basis, it is highly recommended that you consider taking omega-3 supplements.

What is Omega 3 Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)?

EPA, or Eicosapentaenoic Acid, is a type of omega-3 fatty acid predominantly found in the flesh of cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines. It aids in anti-inflammatory processes and helps maintain cardiovascular health by lowering blood triglycerides and potentially reducing the risk of heart disease.

    What is DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)?

DHA, or Docosahexaenoic Acid, is another essential omega-3 fatty acid that supports brain health and vision. It is a key structural component of the brain, the retina of the eyes and numerous other body parts. DHA is especially crucial during pregnancy and early childhood for neurological development.

    Are omega-3 EPA supplements necessary?

Absolutely. If you are unable to eat two to three servings of fish (including oily fish) per week, then supplements can be an excellent source of marine-sourced omega-3s. EPA is essential because our bodies can’t make it in enough quantities. It's particularly important for heart health, as it helps lower triglyceride levels, which may reduce heart disease risk.

EPA is also great for fighting inflammation, which can relieve symptoms from conditions like mild arthritis. It even supports mental well-being, helping to elevate mood and possibly reduce the risk of depression.

For the brain, EPA can be a game changer by reducing inflammation, potentially helping to prevent cognitive decline diseases like Alzheimer's. So, if fish isn't regularly on your menu, considering an EPA supplement might be a wise choice to keep your health in check.

What is the best time of day to take EPA and DHA?

You can take EPA and DHA omega-3 supplements at any time, but for optimal absorption, it's best to take them with meals that contain fats. The presence of dietary fats can enhance the absorption of these fat-soluble nutrients by stimulating bile production, which helps break down the fats and distribute them throughout the body. Try incorporating your omega-3 supplement into a meal that includes healthy fats, such as those found in olive oil, nuts or avocados.

Additionally, it's convenient to take them alongside your other vitamins and supplements as part of your daily routine, ensuring you don’t forget to take them and helping your body get the most from all your supplements. This approach helps streamline your health regimen and simplifies your supplement schedule.

    Is EPA or DHA better?

EPA and DHA serve different functions in the body and are both important. EPA is more effective for reducing inflammation and dealing with mood disorders, while DHA is crucial for brain health and development. The best approach is to ensure a balanced intake of both.

Is EPA good for the skin?

EPA can be highly beneficial for the skin. Its strong anti-inflammatory properties can soothe redness and swelling, which can be good for conditions like acne and eczema. EPA also helps manage oil production, reducing acne breakouts and keeping your skin clear.

Moreover, it can support the skin’s barrier and protect against environmental pollutants and dehydration. One of the most appreciated benefits is its ability to prevent collagen breakdown, keeping your skin firm and youthful. So, EPA is not just good for your skin — it may also be beneficial if you want to maintain its health and appearance as you age.

Is EPA good for the eyes?

Definitely, EPA plays a critical role in eye health. It supports the integrity of the cellular membranes in the eyes, which is vital for proper vision. EPA's anti-inflammatory effects are particularly beneficial in preventing or managing conditions like dry eye syndrome, a common issue that can impair eye health.

Furthermore, it aids in maintaining proper fluid drainage from the eyes, helping to prevent high eye pressure and remove glaucoma. Integrating EPA into your diet can be a proactive step toward maintaining long-term eye health.

    Does EPA help hair growth?

While there isn’t direct evidence tying EPA exclusively to hair growth, its benefits for your scalp can't be overlooked. EPA's anti-inflammatory properties may help mitigate scalp inflammation — a common culprit behind hair thinning and loss.

It also promotes good circulation in the scalp, which provides nourishment to your hair follicles. This could potentially support hair growth and improve overall hair health. While EPA might not be a standalone solution for hair growth, its role in creating a healthy scalp environment makes it a valuable component of hair care.
