Calcium

As we age, our bodies can become less efficient at absorbing calcium and may excrete more in the urine, particularly in women after menopause. Regular exercise, sunlight exposure and a balanced diet all contribute to bone health, but some Australians can still fall short of their daily calcium needs (Source: Sanders et al., 2009, Healthy Bones Australia, 2022; NHMRC, 2006).

Calcium is an important mineral required by the body for maintaining strong bones, healthy teeth and proper muscle function (Dietitians Australia, 2021). When your diet doesn’t provide enough, a quality supplement can be an option to help bridge the gap. Australian NaturalCare’s calcium supplements are formulated to help meet daily requirements and support bone density, helping you stay strong and active so you can move the way you want to.

Calcium Tablets & Supplements for Bone Health and Strength

Research shows that adequate calcium intake, especially when supported by vitamin D, can help maintain bone health and strength. That’s why we include vitamin D3 in our calcium supplements, as it assists your body to absorb calcium more effectively, helping it play its role in supporting strong, healthy bones.

At Australian NaturalCare, we offer two calcium options to suit different needs:

  • Calcium for Healthy Bones is your go-to for everyday bone support, combining calcium with magnesium, zinc, manganese, boron and vitamin D3 to help maintain bone strength and integrity.
  • Bio Calcium + Vitamin D3 & K2 has the addition of vitamin K2 (menaquinone), which also supports bone health by activating proteins that help calcium utilisation. It is formulated with Aquamin®, a form of calcium sourced from red marine algae. Bio Calcium + Vitamin D3 & K2 also supports heart health, muscle function, and general health and wellbeing.

Both formulas help maintain bone strength and support bone health through the different life stages. Choose the one that best suits your preferences.

    • Maintain strong bones and healthy teeth

    • Support muscle contraction

    • Support heart health

    • Help maintain bone density, especially when taken in combination with vitamin D

  • When should I take Calcium supplements?

Check the label for the recommended dosage and follow the directions for use, as calcium supplements differ in strength and daily requirements. Most are best taken with food, and higher doses can be split across the day to support absorption.

For support, consult your healthcare practitioner or book a free 15-minute chat with our qualified naturopaths.

  • How much Calcium is needed daily?

In Australia, most adults need about 1,000 mg of calcium per day, increasing to 1,300 mg for women over 50 and men over 70. If you regularly eat calcium rich foods (e.g., dairy, fortified plant milks, tofu, leafy greens), you may already be meeting part of your daily needs. As individual requirements vary, speak with your healthcare practitioner or a qualified naturopath before starting supplementation to determine what’s right for you.

  • Can I get enough Calcium from food alone, or do I need supplements?

Most healthy people can meet part of their calcium needs through a balanced diet, and this should always be the first preferred option. Foods such as milk, yoghurt, cheese, tofu, fortified plant milks, and leafy green vegetables are all good sources of calcium.

However, many Australians, particularly women and older adults, do not meet the recommended dietary intake for calcium through food alone (Healthy Bones Australia, 2022;NHMRC, 2006).

If you find it difficult to reach your daily calcium goals through diet, a calcium supplement may help fill the gap. It’s best to speak with your healthcare practitioner, or one of our qualified naturopaths, before starting supplements to determine what’s right for your individual needs.

  • What are the benefits of calcium citrate?

Calcium citrate is a bioavailable form of calcium. Research suggests that it is less dependent on stomach acid for absorption, making it a suitable choice for individuals with low stomach acid, and those taking acid-reducing medications. (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (2022)).

  • What are the benefits of Aquamin® Forte?

Aquamin® Forte is a marine based algae rich in calcium and other minerals.

  • What are the benefits of hydroxyapatite?

Hydroxyapatite is the main compound in bones and teeth, consisting of calcium, phosphorus, oxygen, and hydrogen. Calcium provides strength and structure to bones, while phosphorus is essential for bone mineralisation.
