Rose hips, which belong to the Rosa genus of plant, are seed-filled bulbs that are found underneath rose petals. Also called the fruit of the rose. Rose hips get their red-orange colour from carotenoid pigments known as lycopene and beta carotene.
Rose hips also have special compounds called polyphenols like proanthocyanidins and flavonoids such as quercetin and catechin. These compounds give rose hips rich antioxidant properties, which help reduce free radical damage to body cells, plus support general health and wellbeing.
Rose hips are also thought to be a good source of vitamin C.
