Gluten Free Diet

Moving to a Gluten Free Diet

If you have celiac disease, changing to a gluten-free diet is one of the only ways to improve your symptoms. From stomach pain and bloating to diarrhoea and weight loss, gluten causes a variety of problems for one out of 133 people.

Eating gluten prompts an immune response in the small intestine, damaging the lining and leading to malabsorption. Switching to a gluten-free diet improves these symptoms and leads to better health. Gluten is a sticky protein that forms when water and wheat flour mix.

Foods with wheat, barley and rye contain gluten, but gluten is in more foods than just breads, cookies and cakes. From canned soups to condiments, gluten acts as a thickening agent and gives structure to pizza dough and other baked goods.

However, it causes more harm than good to people with gluten sensitivities. Starting a gluten-free diet seems hard at first because you think you have to give up all the foods you love, such as pizza and chocolate cake. With all the gluten-free foods available now, starting and maintaining a gluten-free diet is easier than ever. You avoid the symptoms of gluten and still get to eat cookies, have canned soups and enjoy hot spaghetti.

If you suffer from bloat, brain fog, fatigue and stomach pain after eating foods with gluten, a gluten-free diet could help eliminate your symptoms altogether.
