Natural Treatments for Healthy Hair, Skin & Nails

Posted by Michelle Campbell

Did you know the average woman applies over 500 synthetic chemicals to her body every day? The good news is your kitchen has an array of natural ingredients that can be used for common skin complaints and can give you silky, shiny hair.

Raw Honey – a natural moisturiser that can relieve minor skin ailments. You can use it as a cleanser, moisturiser, mask, blemish spot treatment, lip balm, hair conditioner or hair mask… the uses are endless.

Avocado – one of nature’s best moisturisers, full of healthy fats, vitamin E and protein. It can be used as a hair or face mask.

Coconut Oil – can repair damaged hair and reduce dandruff. We also use it as a skin moisturiser and make-up remover.

Lemon – rich in vitamin C which can help promote collagen production. It can be used as a hair rinse or when diluted with water, help brighten the skin and reduce fine lines.

Olive Oil – works wonderfully as a hot oil treatment for hair as it’s rich in antioxidants and a natural conditioner. You can also use it as a skin moisturiser after a shower and it can be massaged into cuticles to help strengthen your nails.

Turmeric – acts as an anti-inflammatory and astringent making it good for breakouts and redness.

Oats – incredibly soothing for the skin. Oats can be used for mild dermatitis, sunburn, itchy skin, as a cleanser, exfoliator and moisturiser.

Tea – cooled tea bags can relieve sore and puffy eyes and green tea can give you smooth and shiny hair due to its antioxidant and astringent properties.

Apple Cider Vinegar – can balance the pH of your skin and hair and works well as a cleanser for both the hair and skin. Due to its astringent properties, it can be used as a spot treatment for blemishes. It can also prevent hair colour from fading.

Bicarb Soda – a great exfoliator and skin brightener. It can also help remove product build-up in hair, making it softer and smoother.

Honey & Lemon Skin Treatment – mix equal amounts of raw honey and lemon juice and apply to your face and neck. Allow it to dry on its own, then rinse with warm water. You can repeat this treatment once or twice a week.

Avocado Hair Mask – mash 1 ripe avocado and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Apply to damp hair, cover with a shower cap for 1 hour then rinse out.
